Uncle Sam Proved Real as Arkansas Offspring Carry on His Service Legacy

With his star-spangled top hat, steely-eyed gaze and finger pointed squarely at the nation’s heart, Uncle Sam is one of the most recognizable symbols of U.S. patriotism there is. But what many don’t realize is that he was an actual person.

Just ask one of his great-great-great-great-grandchildren.

The direct descendants of Samuel Wilson -- a meat packer from Troy, New York, who supplied beef rations to soldiers during the war of 1812 and is commonly recognized as inspiring the nickname and poster for “Uncle Sam” -- were recently revealed to be living in Arkansas, thanks to research scientists at genealogy site MyHeritage.

“Tracing generations of descendants step-by-step, especially when you're starting with a name like Sam Wilson, which is relatively common, means you have to be sure your research is taking you in the right directions,” Aaron Godfrey, marketing director for the site, told ABC News.

“MyHeritage provides access to billions of historical documents, including newspapers and censuses, and millions of family trees. ... The challenge is knowing where to start yet not knowing what you might discover.”

But while the greater public may have been unaware of their existence, for Helen Painter, eldest sister of seven and matriarch to Samuel Wilson’s living descendants, the revelation has been common family knowledge for as long as she can remember.

“I’ve always pretty much been aware of the connection to Samuel Wilson,” Painter told ABC News. “My grandmother was the daughter of Carlton Sheldon, who was Marion Wilson’s son, and she was the granddaughter of Samuel. Granny always kept us very informed.”

Brought up in a self-described “big, Catholic family,” Painter, along with her five siblings Bill, Jane, Charles, Richard and Thomas Hambuchen were all raised and still live in Conway, Arkansas, as does their mother, Betty Hambuchen, who is 85. Painter’s other brother, John Hambuchen, died in 2009.

Keeping meticulous birth and marriage records, photos and letters from the past, Painter said her grandmother, Lillie Parkes, was sure to educate all family members on their lineage, which occasionally made itself known to a wider audience in the form of school reports and local parades.

“I remember in the 1980s Granny contacted our local fair committee and we rode in the county fair parade as the only living descendent of Uncle Sam,” Painter said. “We rode behind Jerry Lee Lewis, as best I recall.”

But regardless of birth certificates and census records, genes can tell in other ways, too.

Painter, 60, works a tireless schedule as a registered nurse for a local health care facility in Arkansas and will be on call the entire 4th of July weekend, helping to assist those in need. Meanwhile, her eldest son, Trey Hauptmann, 40, is a 20-year veteran of the Navy, and works as a senior chief petty officer.

“We were talking the other night and he said something to the effect of ‘Uncle Sam supplied the army with the meat and pork they needed and today I provide people with the Band-Aids they need,” she recalled. “So in some ways [Samuel Wilson] has influenced his belief in assisting people and helping people.”

MyHeritage's Godfrey told ABC News that one of the most interesting parts of his research on Uncle Sam was the discovery not only that Wilson’s family was still living but that “the descendants of the man believed to be the face of one of America's most patriotic posters are themselves patriots,” he said, “serving in the armed forces or working for their state. The values of patriotism and national service run deep in this family.”

But Painter doesn’t think that leaves others off the hook.

“I think we should all be patriotic because we’re American citizens and we all hold a piece of our heritage no matter what it is,” she said.

“Whether it’s an icon or the person who did more menial jobs that never got that recognition, there are a lot of wonderful people who have done a lot of wonderful things. Hopefully, we can continue to do great things to take care of each other, whether it’s handing out meat, or Band-Aids or handing out a smile or a pat on the back.”

Let’s clear the air: I personally don’t care if you stand on your head and recite Shakespeare backwards, marry your beagle, stack BBs, French kiss rattlesnakes or swan dive into a shallow vat of goat urine. If that’s what turns your religious crank, party on. Just do it downwind of me, and don’t bill me for your rehab.

But when it comes to the pure demonic evil of murderous savage Islamist terrorists, the line is universally drawn by good people worldwide. We all know instinctively that there is no virtue in slaughtering innocent people. No God smiles or rejoices in this.

The only people who smile and rejoice in killing innocent people are those pure evil rabid dogs who kill innocent people. Hitler was evil. Stalin was despicable and evil. So was Pol Pot, Mao Zedong, Idi Amin and other such subhuman mass exterminators. The world is better off with these rabid dogs off the planet.

Now, I’ll admit I’m not opposed to putting hollow points to the back of the heads of human cockroaches and various other vermin who wish to imprison me with their braindead, toxic “values.” Truth is I want to eliminate them from planet Earth and erase them from the history books of the human race.

To show you how radical I am, I want carjackers dead. I want rapists dead.

Beck created “Obama in Pee Pee” in response to a Boston artist who made a controversial painting of President Obama being crucified.

On his radio show Tuesday, Beck said that he didn’t like the painting because of the whole Obama-as-Jesus subtext, but that he supported the artist’s right under the First Amendment to create and display it.

“Art is in the eye of the beholder, and this guy has a right to do this. I think it’s offensive. I don’t think it’s close to reality, but whatever floats your boat. I support his right to do exactly that. I agree with him that people who are upset should not trump his right to be able to do it and be able to hang it wherever he wants — as long as it’s wanted there,” Beck said.

Mexico’s Attorney General Marisela Morales

Morales told Mexican reporters that she is demanding a full and honest explanation from the United States government especially since evidence is being gathered that reveals the Obama administration was more involved in Operation Fast and Furious than top officials admitted in their sworn statements.
If what is being reported is true, U.S. Attorney General and other government officials may have committed perjury and/or obstruction of justice if it’s proven they lied when testifying before House and Senate committees.

Well, good luck with that. Perjury in this administration is as important as a gnat on a banana, but how refreshing it must be to have your country’s Attorney General stand up for the sovereignty of your own nation.

Morales said that if U.S. federal officials were involved, it would be a “betrayal” of Mexico while its police and military were fighting a war against drug cartels. Tens of thousands of Mexicans have been killed since the “war on drugs” began in 2006. Almost weekly, Mexican authorities are finding mass graves of those murdered by the cartels.

So much so, that often they are beaten for not wearing the 'hajib' or for talking to a man who is not a direct family member or their husband.  Yep, the Muslims are all for women's rights,  aren't they? Where were Muslims during World War II? They were aligned with Adolf Hitler. The Muslim grand mufti himself met with Adolf Hitler,  reviewed the troops and accepted support from  the Nazi's in killing Jews. Finally, Mr. Obama, where were Muslims on Sept. 11th, 2001? If they weren't flying planes into the World Trade Center , the Pentagon or a field in Pennsylvania killing nearly 3,000 people on our own soil, they were rejoicing in the Middle East . No one can dispute the pictures  shown from all parts of the Muslim world  celebrating on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC and other cable news networks that day. Strangely, the very "moderate" Muslims who's asses you bent over backwards to kiss in Cairo , Egypt on June 4th were stone cold silent post 9-11. To many Americans, their silence has meant approval for the acts of that day. And THAT, Mr. Obama, is the "rich heritage" Muslims have here in America .. Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot to mention the Barbary Pirates. They were Muslims. And now we can add November 5, 2009 - the slaughter of American soldiers at Fort Hood by a Muslim major who is a doctor and a psychiatrist who was supposed to be counseling soldiers returning from battle in Iraq and Afghanistan .. U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh remains steadfast in his conviction that “radical Islam” threatens the American way of life — a view the controversial congressman again expressed to an unhappy group of Muslim constituents Friday night.

Moon Khan, a Republican Party precinct committeeman in DuPage County and member of the York Township board of trustees, was one of about 80 people who attended an “intense” meeting with Walsh Friday night in the back yard of Khan’s home in Lombard.

“It was a very, very intense meeting, and he did not change his mind,” Khan later said of Walsh.

The meeting was called after Walsh alleged there is “a radical stream of Islam” in the U.S. that threatens the lives of Americans — including residents of Addison, Elgin and Elk Grove — at a townhall meeting in Elk Grove.

At the meeting Friday night, Khan said members of the local Muslim community “are young, American-born-and-raised individuals who share the American dream of a life of liberty, peace and the pursuit of happiness. They are your teachers, doctors, nurses, engineers, policemen and hard-working Americans that [are] productive members of society …”

“Your recent speeches have created catalogues of issues for the Muslim community,” Khan told Walsh, according to a transcript of his remarks.

Two men were sentenced Friday to long prison terms for their roles in a North Carolina-based terror ring that aspired to kill U.S. military personnel.

A federal judge in New Bern sentenced accused ringleader Daniel Patrick Boyd to 18 years. Boyd is a 42-year-old Muslim convert who lived near Raleigh and pleaded guilty in 2011 to charges of conspiring to provide material support to terrorists and plotting to murder, kidnap, maim and injure persons abroad.

Prosecutors said the men were members of a terrorist cell that raised money, stockpiled weapons and trained for jihadist attacks against those they considered enemies of Islam. All seven men convicted as members of the plot, including two of Boyd’s sons, were either U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents. An eighth indicted man is believed to be in Pakistan.

Dylan Boyd was sentenced in December to eight years in federal prison and Zakariya Boyd was sentenced to nine years.
