ROCCO, PITTSBURGH K-9 POLICE DOG, GOING TO DOGGIE HEAVEN WITH FULL HONORS

PITTSBURGH — 

The K-9 officer stabbed during an arrest in Lawrenceville this week will be laid to rest with full honors next Friday.

Rocco's service at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum will be closed to the public but open to public safety workers and local officials.  There will be a procession to the hall, officials said Friday.

Earlier Friday, the man accused of killing the 8-year-old German shepherd was held on $1 million bail. Investigators said John Lewis Rush, 21, was arraigned on several charges of attacking the dog and several officers.

Police said Rush was homeless at the time of his arrest Tuesday.  He was wanted on warrants for probation violations and for failing to register as a sex offender when he fought off an Allegheny County sheriff's deputy, police said.

WWII soldier who hid in jungle for 29 years dies at 91

TOKYO -- Hiroo Onoda, the last Japanese imperial soldier to emerge from hiding in a jungle in the Philippines and surrender, 29 years after the end of World War II, has died. He was 91.

Onoda died Thursday at a Tokyo hospital after a brief stay there. Chief government spokesman Yoshihide Suga on Friday expressed his condolences, praising Onoda for his strong will to live and indomitable spirit.

"After World War II, Mr. Onoda lived in the jungle for many years and when he returned to Japan, I felt that finally, the war was finished. That's how I felt," Suga said.

Onoda was an intelligence officer who came out of hiding, erect but emaciated, in fatigues patched many times over, on Lubang island in the Philippines in March 1974, on his 52nd birthday. He surrendered only when his former commander flew there to reverse his 1945 orders to stay behind and spy on American troops.

After the initial sensation of his return home wore off, Onoda bought a ranch in Brazil. He later was head of a children's nature school in northern Japan.

"I don't consider those 30 years a waste of time," Onoda said in a 1995 interview with The Associated Press. "Without that experience, I wouldn't have my life today."

Still, he showed a great zeal for making up for years lost.

"I do everything twice as fast so I can make up for the 30 years," Onoda said. "I wish someone could eat and sleep for me so I can work 24 hours a day."

On the heels of a federal court striking down Chicago’s ban on gun sales, those seeking gun permits in Illinois flooded the State Police website over the weekend to begin the permitting process.

In fact, the amount of Illinois residents seeking a conceal carry permit already surpasses those who enrolled in Obamacare after the first two months of the launch of healthcare.gov. The Chicago Sun-Times reported 4,525 individuals signed up on Sunday alone for their firearms permits, when the State Police first opened the process to all concealed carry applicants.

Illinois State Police spokeswoman Monique Bond said that number is included in Sunday’s total of more than 11,000 people who have signed up because of an early application process that began December 18 and was open to only firearm instructors. Officials told the Sun-Times they expect 350,000 to 400,000 people (about 1,000 per day) will sign up for conceal carry firearm permits this year.

After the horrible events at Sandyhook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, the legislature there rammed through new Draconian gun laws that are punishing law abiding gun owners for one insane man’s crimes.

So the picture above shows the mad rush of Connecticut gun owners queuing up outside the local government offices to register certain firearms and ammo that are going to be considered illegal in 2014. That's right, American citizens being forced by the government to register their firearms under penalty of the law. Where has our liberty gone?
