RESEARCHERS, WHAT DO THEY KNOW ABOUT COMMON SENSE?

And took them out of their hands in Great Britain. They promised the population that they would be safe, that crime would reduce to almost nothing. It didn’t happen. In fact, crime increased. Crime with knives increased. So now they will ban the knife.
A team from West Middlesex University Hospital said violent crime is on the increase – and kitchen knives are used in as many as half of all stabbings.
They argued many assaults are committed impulsively, prompted by alcohol and drugs, and a kitchen knife often makes an all too available weapon.
They consulted 10 top chefs from around the UK, and found such knives have little practical value in the kitchen.
None of the chefs felt such knives were essential, since the point of a short blade was just as useful when a sharp end was needed.
The researchers say legislation to ban the sale of long pointed knives would be a key step in the fight against violent crime.
“We suggest that banning the sale of long pointed knives is a sensible and practical measure that would have this effect.”

SHERIFF JOE ARPAIO
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Thursday that he plans to deploy his armed volunteer posse to protect Valley schools from the kind of violence that happened in the Connecticut shooting tragedy. Arpaio believes having armed law officers around schools will deter would-be criminals from trying anything violent and, possibly, stop them if they do.
Arpaio first started using his posse to protect malls during the holiday shopping season in 1993 in response to violent incidents in prior years. Since then he said malls where his posse members are on patrol have had zero violent re-occurrences and patrols by his all-volunteer squad during the 2012 shopping season netted a record 31 arrests.“I have the authority to mobilize private citizens and fight crime in this county,” Arpaio said.

Americans mourned a military legend after retired Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf died Thursday at age 78, leaving behind a legacy that most famously included driving Saddam Hussein\’s forces out of Kuwait.
Schwarzkopf died, in Tampa, from complications from pneumonia. He was remembered not only for his impressive military record, but his intelligence, his modesty and his warmth and dedication to fellow service members.
\”His epitaph should read that he was a soldier who loved solders,\” retired Gen. Bob Scales, who knew the late general, told Fox News.
Nicknamed \”Stormin\’ Norman,\” Schwarzkopf went on after he retired to support various national causes and children\’s charities while eschewing the spotlight and resisting efforts to draft him to run for political office.
He lived out a quiet retirement in Tampa, where he\’d served his last military assignment and where an elementary school bearing his name is testament to his standing in the community.
Schwarzkopf capped an illustrious military career by commanding the U.S.-led international coalition that drove Hussein\’s forces out of Kuwait in 1991 — but he\’d managed to keep a low profile in the public debate over the second Gulf War against Iraq, saying at one point that he doubted victory would be as easy as the White House and the Pentagon predicted.

COMING TO YOU THIS SUMMER
At the moment it is a faint object, visible only in sophisticated telescopes as a point of light moving slowly against the background stars. It doesn't seem much – a frozen chunk of rock and ice – one of many moving in the depths of space. But this one is being tracked with eager anticipation by astronomers from around the world, and in a year everyone could know its name.
Comet Ison could draw millions out into the dark to witness what could be the brightest comet seen in many generations – brighter even than the full Moon.

Blog turns tables on gun map paper
A blogger who retaliated against a New York newspaper that came under fire for identifying people with gun licenses in its circulation area explained on Thursday why he published the names and home addresses of the paper’s employees.
“Well, I just thought they were being hypocrites,” said Christopher Fountain on CNN’s “Early Start.” “In the aftermath of Newtown, it was obviously one tragedy, but somehow they were conflating legal gun owners with some crazed tormented devil up in Newtown and putting the two together. And I was offended by that and I wondered how they would like it if their addresses were published.”

Fountain’s blog on Wednesday linked to a map that identified — with pictures — employees of the suburban New York newspaper, the Journal News, as well as their places of residence. That move came several days after the Journal News published interactive maps of Westchester and Rockland counties, which named people with gun licenses and included their addresses — ignitingoutrage from the right and from some readers.
“We knew publication of the database [as well as the accompanying article providing context] would be controversial, but we felt sharing information about gun permits in our area was important in the aftermath of the Newtown shootings,” Janet Hasson, president and publisher of the Journal News Media Group, told POLITICO Wednesday in a statement.
In an accompanying piece, the paper had said that some citizens “would like lawmakers to expand the amount of information the public can find out about gun owners” after the Newtown massacre.
Fountain swung back at that response.
“Well, she could have just published the number of gun permits, which is actually quite small, if she wanted to show an issue that there are 2,000 legally registered guns in her county, fine,” he said. “But the fact that they put the addresses — I’ve received e-mails from abused women who were under protective order and in hiding and they’re terribly afraid that now their names and addresses are all over the Internet and accessible through that map.”
He added that he was giving the paper a taste of its own medicine.
“The media has been exposing, harassing personal details of people for a long time,” Fountain said. “I don’t believe I’m escalating, I believe I’m punching back.
“My original point in posting this was to just show those particular reporters and the publisher what it feels like,” he continued.
The map that was eventually posted offered a much more extensive list of Journal News employees.
A GOOD DOG STORY!
When their blind eight-year-old dog went missing from their remote Alaskan home in a heavy snowstorm, the Grapengeter family felt sure they'd never see her again. But after more than a week of searching in temperatures as low as minus 40C, Abby, a brown-and-white mixed-breed whom the Grapengeters rescued from an animal shelter as a puppy, turned up safe and sound at the home of a local vet.
Abby first disappeared from the family's five-acre property near Fairbanks on 13 December. Given she'd gone blind a year ago, McKenzie Grapengeter and her three children held out little hope for her return. But on 23 December they received a call saying Abby had been found more than 10 miles away – and without even a trace of frostbite.

On Christmas Eve, firefighters from Webster, NY responded to a house fire. Soon after arriving on the scene, shots rang out and four firemen fell to the ground. The rest of the firefighters took cover and radioed that they were being shot at and that they had firemen who had been shot.
Soon after, police arrived and exchanged shots with the suspect. Then, the 62 year old turn his gun on himself and fired a fatal shot, ending the skirmish. William Spengler lay dead from his own hand.
Firemen Theodore Scardino and Joseph Hofstetter were wounded and transported to the nearby hospital where they will spend their Christmas. However, Thomasz Kaczowka (19) and Mike Chiapperini (43) were not as fortunate as they both suffered fatal wounds and will never see their family again, at least not here on earth. Kaczowka was a 911 dispatcher who also served as a volunteer firefighter. Chiapperini was a Lieutenant with the Webster police department who also served as a volunteer firefighter and who was named Fireman of the Year just two weeks ago.

HOW ABOUT WE TAKE AWAY GOVERNMENT GUNS?
If the government hates guns so much, why don’t they get rid of their own? If they think guns are the problem, and that stockpiling weapons and ammo is something that only weirdos and terrorists do, why have they been buying up and stockpiling all the ammo in the past year or so, including hollow point ammo and sniper rounds?
Media and politicians like to ask 2nd Amendment advocates why the law should allow the purchase of “assault” weapons. They ask, “Do you really need assault weapons?” They say the only reason people would ever want to buy one is so they can murder a bunch of people in a short amount of time. Therefore, they say they should be outlawed. A blogger took it a step further:
Well, who really needs more than $50,000 a year to live on? Or more than an 800 sq. foot dwelling? Does anyone need more car than is sufficient to get from A to B at the posted speed limit? Who really needs anything beyond the bare minimum necessary to maintain one’s physical existence? Who needs to live to be older than 80? Who needs to have more than one kid? Do you really need a 40 ounce drink? Or more than one drink of soda per day? How many calories per day does a person need? Oh, but guns are different!
